Impervious surfaces don't allow water to penetrate into the ground. Most driveways and sidewalks are made of impervious surfaces, but there are many beautiful ways to use pervious surfaces in their place.

Use these materials alone or in combination to replace your concrete or blacktop:

  • Gravel
  • Brick (set in sand, not concrete)
  • Interlocking pavers
  • Stepping stones
  • Wood chips or other mulch

Stone walkways set on grass are easy to construct and maintain.

A cement driveway is removed to make way for a vegetable garden.

A gravel driveway allows stormwater to seep back into the ground.
