A lasagna garden is a quick and easy way to turn your lawn into a garden. Gardens infiltrate 3 times more stormwater than the average lawn, and a mulched garden will remove 90% of the pollutants in a 1-inch rainstorm.

You can start your lasagna garden any time in the spring, summer, or fall.

A lasagna garden is as easy as 1-2-3:

1. Put cardboard or newspaper down on top of your grass.

2. Spread mulch over the cardboard or newspaper.

3. Wait. The following Spring, dig in your new garden!

Notes:

The cardboard or newspaper will biodegrade into the soil, so there is nothing to remove.

Most grass will die, but you will have some grass to pull up in the first year or two.

This is a great technique for increasing size of existing gardens. It's hard to tell where the "real" garden ends and the lasagna garden begins, even immediately after creation!
